Global Pharmaceuticals Giant Leverages CI&T’s World-Class Drupal Expertise

Optimize Website Development

Company: Worldwide Pharmaceutical Powerhouse
As one of the largest research-based drug makers in the world, the Company develops and manufactures some of the most well-known over-the-counter and prescription medicines for both people and animals. Its diversified healthcare portfolio includes human and animal biologic and small molecule medicines and vaccines, as well as nutritional products for consumer brands. Based in the United States, with a major presence throughout the globe, the Company's products are marketed in approximately 150 countries and its 2012 revenues were more than $60 billion.

Challenge: Keeping Website Development Costs Down
With hundreds of brands, each with its own unique audience, the Company developed and maintained hundreds of external websites. Like all businesses in a down economy, the Company was looking to reduce the costs of developing these websites. Not only were vendor rates high, but it used the Microsoft .NET platform for website creation, which traditionally has high development and containment costs. It was also required to pay a licensing fee to Microsoft for using the platform.

The Company embarked on a search for a cost-effective alternative to its standard website development for both its consumer and pharmaceutical brands. It was also important that while saving money, the Company did not sacrifice quality and quick development time.

After a thorough RFP process, the Company selected a Nearshore partner to take over its external website development. It chose CI&T for its stellar industry reputation, quality services, market expertise, lower rates and compelling Drupal proposal.

Solution: A Whole New (Cost-Efficient) World with Drupal
Based in Campinas, Brazil, and with offices and development centers throughout North and South America, CI&T is a different kind of technology company that uses progressive technologies in its approach to create competitive advantages that drive business forward. With the largest single group of Drupal developers in the world, CI&T employs Agile methodologies and Lean principles to provide support for hundreds of Drupal sites for its multi-branded customers. Its strategic partnership with Acquia also ensured even further Drupal support and cloud-hosting services.

CI&T began working with the Company in July 2011, providing web development teams to work with the consumer brands and a small support team to manage the existing .NET and upcoming Drupal sites. The initial project proved to be so successful that the Company expanded its relationship with CI&T to include its pharmaceutical brands and the development of mobile sites.

With CI&T's support, the Company also switched its hosting services from Verizon to Acquia to increase its Drupal support and reduce costs by putting its applications in the cloud. The Company is progressive in that it is one of the first of its size to migrate to Acquia - which reflects it confidence in Drupal for the enterprise.

Results: Smoother, More Cost-Efficient Website Development
By utilizing Drupal, CI&T was able to offer the Company competitive rates that, when combined with CI&T's focus on creating competitive advantages for its clients, produced higher-quality deliverables. Since Drupal is open source, the Company no longer had to pay the steep Microsoft licensing fees. CI&T was also developing the Drupal sites much faster and more smoothly than when the Company was using .NET, which can be a bulky and complex platform.

A year and a half after the initial engagement with CI&T, the Company experienced a 90 percent decrease in the number of website production defects.

Today, three of CI&T's development teams are working with the Company in the United States, Brazil and Argentina. CI&T and the Company are continuing to expand their partnership into mobile applications and back-end development globally.
